Wall & Garage Insulation in Charleston, WV

Wall Insulation Contractors in Charleston, WV

Wall insulation is the upgrade most Charleston homeowners never think about, even though walls make up most of the surface your house shows to the weather. When the cavities behind your drywall are empty or only thinly filled, heat passes straight through them. You feel it as chilly corners in January, stuffy bedrooms on a July afternoon and energy bills that look high for the size of the house.

Reed’s Home Solutions has been Charleston’s trusted foundation repair and insulation company since 1989. Our crews add wall insulation to existing homes across the Kanawha Valley, usually without removing drywall, plaster or siding. We inspect first, tell you what we find in plain language and give you a free, no-obligation estimate before any work starts.

The same approach covers garage insulation, whether your garage is attached, detached or tucked under the main floor of a hillside house.

Retrofit Insulation Installation Without Opening Up Your Walls

Insulation installation in a finished wall is done with loose-fill. A crew member drills a small hole into each stud bay, from the inside or the outside depending on your siding and interior finish, and feeds insulation through a hose until the cavity is packed firm. Every hole is then plugged, patched and cleaned up.

We use cellulose or fiberglass loose-fill, with an R-value of 3.2 to 3.8 for each inch of depth. Packing it densely is what makes the difference. The material flows around wiring, pipes, fire blocking and every awkward corner that a batt would leave open, and it is firm enough that it does not slump over the years.

If your walls are open because of a gut renovation, an addition or new framing, spray foam or batts go in before the drywall instead. Our Charleston insulation team will point you to the right method for your house.

Signs the Walls in Your Charleston Home Need More Insulation

Any of these is a good reason to have the walls looked at.

Garage Insulation for Hillside and Valley Homes

Across the Charleston area, plenty of houses sit on slopes, and many of them have a garage tucked into the lower level with living space overhead. That layout is hard to keep comfortable. The garage takes on whatever the weather is doing, and the floor and shared walls of the rooms above pass it along.

We handle garage insulation with spray foam or blown-in material, depending on how the framing is built. Spray foam seals the sill, the framing and the wall you share with the house in a single pass. Blown-in suits closed cavities and ceilings. Either way, the garage gets quieter, more stable in temperature and more usable as a workshop or storage room.

Finished garage walls usually do not need to come down. We can dense-pack them through small access holes, just as we do in the rest of the house.

Choosing Between Blown-In, Spray Foam and Batts for Your Walls

The right material depends on whether your walls are finished or open and on what you need the insulation to do.

Dense-Pack Blown-In

The usual answer for finished walls. It fills each cavity through small holes, so the drywall stays where it is.

Spray Foam

A strong choice for open framing and leaky garages. It insulates and seals air gaps at the same time.

Fiberglass Batts

A practical fit for open stud bays during new construction, additions and gut renovations.

Why Wall Insulation Matters in the Kanawha Valley

Charleston has humid river air, hot summers and cold winters, so your walls work in both directions. In summer, sun-heated siding pushes warmth inward and your air conditioner fights to keep up. In winter, heat leaks out through every thin or empty cavity. Insulation slows both.

The West Virginia energy code lists R-20, or R-13 plus 5 of continuous insulation, for wood-frame walls in climate zone 4, which is where Charleston falls. You can read the numbers in the West Virginia energy code summary. If your walls hold little or no insulation, there is usually room to improve on that.

Because damp air is a fact of life here, we check for moisture before we fill any wall. Insulation does not fix a wet wall. If we find signs of water coming in, we tell you, and our team can look at basement waterproofing or foundation issues first.

Insulating Over-Garage Rooms, Cantilevers and Shared Walls

A bonus room or bedroom over a garage, or a floor that overhangs a cantilever, is exposed to outside air from below. Cold floors in winter and a stubborn warm room in summer are the usual complaints. Adding insulation to the ceiling of the garage and the cantilever floor cuts the heat exchange at its source.

Where the garage ceiling is finished, we can dense-pack it through small holes, so the drywall stays in place. Where the framing is exposed, spray foam seals gaps along the rim joist and the surrounding framing at the same time. The wall your garage shares with the house gets the same treatment, which also cuts down on noise and odors that drift inside.

We look at how the structure is built, what sits above it and how you use the space, and then recommend the method that fits.

Your Day With the Wall Insulation Crew

Retrofit wall work is cleaner than most people expect. The crew lays down floor protection, parks the equipment outside and moves through the house in an orderly pattern so no cavity is skipped. Depending on how your home is built, the holes may be drilled indoors, outdoors or a mix of the two.

Once every cavity is packed, the crew plugs and patches each hole, leaving a surface you can prime and paint. Most attics, walls and garages wrap up in one day, and your written estimate spells out the schedule. Questions come up? The crew is right there to answer them.

Attics, walls and garages usually wrap up in a day. Your estimate includes the expected schedule for your particular house.
